Good Gaming Laptop – Gigabyte GTX 1060 P55Wv6 is GOOD!

UPDATE: GTX 1060 Laptop Gameplay FPS Playlist

Sporting a similar look to it’s big brother the new P55W v6 Gaming Laptop looks a little sleeker with its 15.6″ frame in black with a subtle orange trim running down the sides (a perfect match with the new Prodigy Gaming Headset from Logitech G), inside is a killer i7-6700HQ + GTX 1060 combo so we’ve got the power needed for some pretty high end gaming and when connected to mains power this laptop is also a VR Ready system \o/

Starting tests off with a good long game of Battlefield 1 the Gigabyte P55W v6 is looking very good indeed running above 60FPS at ultra!

Quickly making our way into the Witcher 3 the GTX 1060 does very well yet again, with a little tweaking of the settings we hit our 60FPS target while slicing down bandits 🙂 If you’re lucky enough to have somehow not played the Witcher 3 yet a Game of the Year Edition has just released and you’re in for a treat as this single player game looks good and plays great.

The multiplayer esports hit Overwatch plays pretty flawlessly on this config also, busting out over 100FPS at times while playing at maximum settings.  Competitive play is in full swing and if you’re looking for a laptop to play on the go, the GTX 1060 is ready for the challenge!

For Virtual Reality you’ll want to be connected to mains power and below is an extremely boring video showing the performance check 😛 Until we figure out the best way to capture the 90hz this is the best way we can show performance but once we figure things out we’ll replace these videos with some actual VR Gaming 🙂

When checking out the performance on battery we tested a couple of important things out, the first being battery life while heavy gaming which was 82mins (impressive) and the second, more interesting thing was how being on battery affected the performance of the dedicated GTX 1060 graphics inside. For this test we ran on battery while playing some Battlefield 1 and brought the charge down down to around 35% remaining then recorded some gameplay showing the differences in performance you can expect when gaming on the go – this gaming laptop did much better than anything else we’ve had the pleasure of testing with only a very small settings tweak needed to keep playing with excellent FPS. (It’s quite possible the GTX 1050 laptops will be able to play without tweaking settings between plugged in and battery, can’t wait to see!)

Keep your eyes on our GGPC YouTube Channel for more gameplay to check out!

Looking closely at the machine itself we find excellent build quality and very little flex, the full sized chiclet keyboard has is a clean white LED that makes things easy to read and we see the addition of a USB Type-C port which is great for transferring massive files.  It has HDMI 2.0 for connecting to a 4K screen all the other little mod cons we look for like Bluetooth 4.1 and a cup holder (JK) but yet again – no DisplayPort sadly! The 1080P IPS display looks beautiful though with great colours and very little reflection or glare from the matt panel 🙂

UPDATE: We’ve continued testing out everything this excellent new laptop has to offer (we also checked out other versions from MSi and Asus to compare) and now that we’ve had a really good go with it we’re happy to give the Gigabyte P55Wv6 our GGPC recommendation – This GTX 1060 Gaming Laptop is GOOD!

Good Gaming Headset – Logitech G231 in Battlefield 1 Orange!

GGPC Logitech G231 Headset is goodJust announced, Logitech have some awesome new gaming gear coming they’ve bunched together under the name Prodigy \o/

Based on the excellent G230 Gaming Headset (which we already know is good) the new Prodigy G231 continues the tradition and offers the perfect solution for gamers looking for an extremely lightweight option that has a fold up microphone and connects via 3.5mm rather than USB.

The earpieces have been designed to be slim and light, without skimping on audio quality. Marathon gaming sessions mean things can get a little hot and sweaty so those talented guy and gals in the Logitech G design team covered the G231 ear cups with high performance cloth for a comfortable, soft touch but these also slip off easily for washing so we can keep our headsets in tip top condition 🙂

The G231 unidirectional mic can be positioned as needed for clear communication on the battlefield, should someone in the real world urgently need to ask you a question just flick the mic up to talk to them without your teammates hearing what you’re about to have for dinner. There is also quick volume/mic controller on the cable itself and you can mute the mic here with the flick of a switch – too easy!

Sometimes between games we like to have our headsets around our necks while we discuss strategy with our team mates and it can be a bit uncomfortable doing this with fixed earcups, the G231 earpieces can swivel 90 degrees which is great for this – nice work Logitech!

The Logitech G231 Prodigy Gaming Headset is available in New Zealand now and we’ll update the GGPC Computers Blog with the latest as we’ve got some other awesome new Logitech Prodigy Gaming Gear incoming!

Good Gaming – Battlefield 1 OPEN BETA begins!

Battlefield 1 Beta

UPDATE: You can now download the Battlefield 1 BETA here

It’s time to go boots on the ground at the dawn of all-out war! The Battlefield 1 Open Beta has begun and we’ve started testing out graphics cards for our GGPC YouTube performance test channel with the two game modes on offer – Conquest & Rush \o/

This Battlefield 1 beta takes us into battle on the Sinai Desert map, which features horseback combat, dogfighting in planes and an epic looking armoured train of death! The map supports 64 players so the action should be thick and fast.

Kicking our frame rate tests off we jumped into a game with the new and very affordable Gigabyte RX 460 Graphics Card, we got solid performance from the little GPU and wow does this game look GOOD!

Next we check out the GTX 1060 Gaming Laptop performance and things are looking very good indeed on this new generation of mobile gaming systems, keeping our heads well above 60FPS in the Sanai Desert Conquest.

For those looking to turn up those graphics settings we’ve got the massive Gigabyte GTX 1080 Graphics Card which dominated Battlefield 1 at 1080p but also performed amazingly at 4K!

We’ll continue checking out more graphics card performance with the Battlefield 1 BETA so keep an eye out for more videos soon – there’s certainly a lot going on in the map!

When one side needs a boost, an Armored Train Behemoth will be spawned in order to up the challenge for the stronger team. The train offers a range of weapons and can make a huge difference if used effectively. This means the opposing team will need to adjust to the new presence. Bomber planes are pretty effective if their pilots’ aim stays true, though the train is also susceptible to a surprise attack by an organized group on horseback armed with anti-vehicle grenades. But as you might expect, the Armored Train won’t go down without a fight.

The map also offers different weather than many of the others, including the occasional sandstorm that wreaks havoc on visibility and the gameplay dynamics. Strong winds blowing up sand is bad news for snipers and planes alike, though skilled pilots may be able to take advantage of the chaos. Things like these sandstorms and the variety of locations makes sure you can have just as fun with any of the infantry classes as you can with vehicles, and create a great variation of intensity throughout the map.

And while there’s a ton to do on the ground, there’s just as much going on in the skies. One of the flags can be even taken by plane if you have the skills to safely fly inside the capture zone – you’ll want to make sure to disable the Anti-Aircraft on the ground first, though, as someone could be lurking around on the ground just waiting for you to fly in. If you’re more interested in dogfights, there’s plenty of interesting opportunities for that as well and some of the people at DICE claim to have gotten pretty good at ditching would-be attackers by flying through the canyon without crashing – challenge accepted!

GAME ON!
