As usual the hardest part is going to be deciding which game to choose, so let’s take a closer look at both options.
First up – Ghost Recon: Wildlands!
Bolivia, a few years from now. The country has become the largest cocaine producer in the world. The Santa Blanca drug cartel has turned the country into a narco-state, leading to lawlessness, injustice, and violence. The Ghosts, an elite US Special Forces team, is sent behind enemy lines to wreak havoc and takedown the cartel.
This one enjoyed the largest turnout during the Ubisoft open beta phase and is best played with a group of friends, if you find yourself in solo queue being a helicopter pilot or driver for a bunch of randoms is still pretty darn fun as well!
Next up – For Honor!
This new hack’n’slash capture’n’hold game proved itself early on with some very beautiful graphics and a slick melee battle system that had us ramming our way through the ranks to take on opposing warriors in fierce hand to hand (or blade to blade) combat.
Many, many hours have been spent in For Honor at GGPC NZ, the matches often become fantastically close battles with the skill based player matching systems working very well indeed – this one is truly exceptional if you play often, you’ll start to recognise opponents from previous encounters in game and the focus shifts from an all out battle to hunting each other down relentlessly with some face-offs lasting the entire round.

With our most recent Dark Knight eSports edition we changed things up a lot upgrading toa very nice new chassis, an unlocked and water cooled intel i7-6700K + 500GB SSD and massive 4TB HDD for storage but the biggest change came from us fitting an EVGA Hybrid GTX 1070, which also has a very fancy all in one liquid cooler attached 🙂
And this is where things get fun 🙂 The GTX 1080 + i7-6700K is able to hit a whopping 19400 in the Final Fantasy Benchmark run which is pretty excellent, our tests with the GTX 1070 + i7-6700K in Paladin gave us an impressive result of 17800 which was actually a lot closer than we thought it would be… this might actually be possible with an OC. In game it was very difficult to tell the two graphics card apart performance wise (both run most on ultra settings pretty darn well) but the EVGA Hybrid 1070 under full load is much much quieter, something we specifically wanted for this build as it’ll be used for a lot of live game streaming.
We had such a good time testing things out in our GTX 950 Hero Overclocking Blog so we thought we’d do it again and see if we how close we could get to the 19400 score with our Dark Knight 1070 by making full use of that sweet cooling 🙂
The rules are simple, overclocking of the graphics card is savvy but we’re not going to touch the CPU or RAM at all 😛
We’ll be using our favourite FREE benchmark for this one set to maximum detail at 1920×1080, you can download the Final Fantasy Benchmark software via this blog from Nvidia Benchmarks, it’s free so you can install and test your own systems at home and compare with various configurations we have in our Gaming PC Benchmark Playlist.
For overclocking we’ll be using the Asus GPU tweak II software (also FREE!) as we love how easy it is to use, feel free to use any software you want for this though as it all does pretty much the same thing. It doesn’t matter which flavour of graphics card you are using either – other software choices like Afterburner or Precision will still work just fine 🙂
Starting with a base test at stock settings we exceed our previous base test and score 18000, this is going to be easier than first thought but we’ll still be needing around 9% performance gains to get reach to our dream target of 19400 \o/
We then started tweaking a little, first cranking power limit to max for a run before we tinker with the all important Core Clock and Memory Clock. We then tweaked these up with basic +100 to each, with GPU tweak II you can click and type in target clock speed rather than using the sliders, also don’t forget to click the tick to apply the settings. This gave us slightly better results with a score coming in a 18400, now to close the gap!
With a little tweaking and a few long tests to be sure it’s stable we managed an impressive 19228 with the 1070! (less than 1% off our GTX 1080 score!) You can check out the final scene in our benchmark run video below, with a quick snapshot of our settings shown at the very end to make things easy if you’re wanting to tinker for yourself at home – maybe even push things up a little higher!
If you’re overclocking to see just how far you can get remember that not all graphics cards limits are identical and overclocking results can vary a bit from card to card but that makes it all the more fun when you get a really good one! Go slowly as you increase the clock speeds look out for graphical glitches so you know when the limits of your card are getting close. The first one to keep an eye out for is pop in (or missing) textures, if you see odd colour dimming or pink and green flashes your OC is likely a little too high 😛 If you go wayyy to far you’ll crash either the benchmark software, nvidia display driver or force reboot your PC so play it safe and go slow so you avoid having to reboot.
Lot’s of fun to be had with this kind of thing in any case, keep your eyes on GGPC Computers Blog for the latest gameplay tests, custom builds and more!
Gear up with a new GTX 1070, GTX 1080 or grab a Gaming PC or Gaming Laptop featuring one of these and you can register that powerful new graphics card to get a game code for Watch Dogs 2 \o/

Those fine folks @ Nvidia have uploaded some tasty 4K gameplay to tide us over until we get to try this one out for ourselves 😛
Jumping straight into gaming the new GTX 1070 doesn’t disappoint, specs for this one are quite similar to the recently released GTX 1080 with a large memory allocation of 8GB GDDR5 (no X, that’s only with the 1080) and a boost clock speed of 1683MHz with slightly less cuda cores. Without overclocking this new GTX 1070 graphics card from Nvidia is capable of some extremely high end settings while gaming and even if you’re gearing up to go with a new GTX 1070 in a Gaming Laptop, performance is excellent!
With the desktop version of the GTX 1070 we started testing with a very affordable intel i5 combo and received a top score exceeding what is currently deemed necessary for a VR Ready Gaming PC 🙂 This is going to be a very popular graphics card indeed even if the video below is extremely boring to watch!
After our initial tests with the desktop GTX 1070 we updated our design from the i5-6400 we used originally to a slightly more powerful i5-6500 for our new GGPC Warlock GTX 1070 Gaming PC, this gave us a little more power balance (both CPU are great but the 6500 is certainly faster) and performance is now better in games like Assassins Creed. Check out our PC build on GGPC PC Part Picker if you’re looking to build a 1070 system yourself and are hunting for a starting point to tweak from 🙂
Below is DOOM from our GTX 1070 Gaming Laptop In-Game Framerate Playlistand if you’ve got some time you can check out a range of games with system stats shown top left and settings we used (always chasing 60FPS!) shown at the end of each gameplay 🙂
Moving onto the Desktop GTX 1080 we decided to do all tests at 3840×2160 resolution and chase 60FPS as always, we did this for a few reasons but mainly because if you’re after a GTX 1080 Gaming PC you’re probably wanting to play in 4K and also because too many attempts at 2560×1440 had us just selecting all ultra settings 😛
The Battlefield 1 BETA sure looks beautiful in 4K, the desert map was great fun and we can’t wait to do more tests when the full game releases, check out the new GTX 1080 Gameplay FPS Test Playlist for more performance tests in a range of games and let us know anything you’d like to see tested 🙂
The Nvidia GTX 1080 is now available in New Zealand and our friends over at PB Tech NZ have three stunning new Gaming PC builds using founders edition graphics cards from Asus, EVGA and Gigabyte. Each gaming system has been built around the flavour of graphics card inside, let’s check out the builds!
First up the very green Gigabyte G1 Gaming Machine!
Using the Gigabyte Z170 G1 Sniper Edition motherboard was a top choice, not only does this provide the unlocked i7-6700K processor with all the tools for a hearty overclock it also matches the NZXT H440 in green perfectly! Fitted with a maintenance free Cooler Master Nepton Liquid Cooling kit and Crucial Ballistix DDR4 ram this gaming rig is sure to make the most of the perfect matching Gigabyte GTX 1080 founders edition fitted inside 🙂
Dual storage devices include a Crucial solid state drive for really fast boot times + a large hard drive so you can install all your games and go crazy all night long!
Next on the list – an extremely tidy build with EVGA! This build looks classy, the CM MasterCase 5 was a fine choice indeed and matches the EVGA Z170 FTW (for the win) Edition motherboard inside with it’s dark silver and black colour scheme. A fully modular EVGA SuperNOVA powersupply has also been used and it’s all looking extremely good together, a white LED lighting kit makes the components inside this build POP! You’ll also enjoy dual storage options yet again with this one and the build is also ready to add a second GTX 1080 in SLi when the new connectors arrive – crazy…
Lastly, and even more impressive than the first two, is the Asus Republic of Gamers version.
This one’s just a little more extreme and has a massive radiator (240mm) in the front to ensure great temperatures as you push your games to the limit and beyond! The Asus ROG HERO Motherboard is the AURA version and this is connected to the chassis RGB lighting so you’ll be able to go crazy with special effects and find the perfect theme, this also allows for a bunch of really cool effects and you could even set it to give you a light show when you play some music 🙂
The case is an epic silver Phanteks Evolv with tempered glass side panels so you’ll be able to gaze at your glorious GTX 1080 inside while it pulses to the beat of your tunes!
Great builds indeed, these are all the creations of “Mojo” and we’ll be sure to feature more of his awesome builds in future GGPC blogs to come 🙂 We’ll be unveiling our own GGPC GTX 1080 build when the new Asus Strix versions of the 1080 arrive!
