Good Gaming PC – eSports NZ custom builds!

GoodGamingTeam

We’re pretty excited to be competing in the upcoming Ping Zero! eSports tournaments and we’ve been working hard on creating some very special gaming PC for our GGPC team players to use throughout the event.

GGPC GTX 1070 Warlock eSports Edition PC!

We’ve made this build quite small by using the Phanteks EVOLV and with this new form factor we had plenty of space on the desk for our weapons of choice – Logitech G Gaming Gear setups for eSports!

Good Graphics Card – Asus GTX 1060 available now!

GTX 1060
What a treat! This time around we got to skip the founders edition and move straight into testing out the latest Asus ROG STRIX GTX 1060 graphics card!

This beastly new graphics card looks utterly amazing, even when it’s off.  Turn it on and not only does Republic of Gamers start glowing with a vibrant LED but half the card lights up to go along with it – you can check these out for yourself on our GGPC Instagram 🙂  It’s a Aura RGB Lighting system so you’ll be able to tweak things so the card will match your setup perfectly.

It’s a massive card, much larger than we expected but comes packed with all those fancy ASUS technologies like their DirectCU III with a triple wing-blade 0dB fan designed to deliver maximum airflow and quieter performance. It also features GPU-controlled fan headers you can connect to system fans for targeted supplemental cooling which we’re looking forward to playing around with 🙂 We were surprised to that even this massive aftermarket version didn’t have an SLi bridge though!

GGPC GTX1060 build
Performance wise it doesn’t disappoint, we’ve begun testing out our favourites and as you’ll see in our quick Overwatch FPS below the in game results are pretty excellent!  This new graphics card also meets the requirements for a VR ready PC which is sure to put at the top of many peoples upgrade lists, and if you’re thinking of upgrading from the Nvidia 700 series this new graphics card is certainly a fine choice.

This time around it’s a little different from the other recent 10 series launches with the aftermarket cooler versions being available and the Nvidia Founders edition only being sold directly by Nvidia, sadly that means it’s pretty unlikely we’ll see the reference version down here in NZ 🙁

There are a few different flavours available for the GTX 1060 now in New Zealand and they are all quite unique, the new GTX 1060 G1 Gaming edition features the new dual fan cooling system with alternate spinning fans and 2 composite copper heat pipes with direct touch to the GPU, much like the Asus GTX 1060 above the fans shut off during low usage for silent operation. Gigabyte have additional GTX 1060 models coming including a both a mid sized and small form factor version!

G1 GTX 1060 top

EVGA have created what’s looking to be the best GTX 1060 options with a very cool, very small graphics card on offer as well.   Seriously how cool are these!  These cards also feature EVGA ACX cooling technology which once again allows for silent operation and also feature optimized swept fan blades, double ball bearings and an extreme low power motor, delivering more airflow with less power which EVGA say allows additional power for the GPU.

EVGA 1060 small and big

Pretty cool right!  We’ve uploaded our first GTX 1060 custom build to PC Part Picker for you all to check out, and be sure to swing by the GGPC YouTube and GGPC Facebook for as we have a lot more gameplay coming from these excellent new graphics cards 🙂

GG!

Good Graphics Card – GTX 1060 incoming

GTX 1060 NZ

UPDATE: The GTX 1060 is available in New Zealand now!

Nvidia has unveiled the new GTX 1060 and it’s the most exciting Pascal-based graphics card lineup yet – Nvidia claims the GTX 1060 is faster than a GTX 980!

This awesome new graphics card is set to be released worldwide on July 19 and while the full technical specifics for the GTX 1060 aren’t available just yet, Nvidia claims is easily overclocked to 2GHz and beyond but best of all – the power supplied is via a single 6-pin connector, this will enable us to do some crazy small gaming PC builds featuring this new card and the overall price should be very good indeed! Like the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070, the GTX 1060 will be available from manufacturers like Gigabyte, Asus and EVGA as well as a founders edition from Nvidia.

The early launch of the GTX 1060 makes things pretty interesting with AMD set to release the RX 470 shortly afterwards, in any case we can’t wait to show you our YouTube Gameplay FPS tests for both!

Good Graphics – GTX 1080 and 1070 Available NOW

UPDATE: The GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 available in New Zealand now!

UPDATE: Gameplay FPS Test playlists are live now for the GTX 1050, GTX 1060, GTX 1070, GTX 1080 and also GTX 1060 Laptop, GTX 1070 Laptop

Jumping straight into gaming the new GTX 1070 doesn’t disappoint, specs for this one are quite similar to the recently released GTX 1080 with a large memory allocation of 8GB GDDR5 (no X, that’s only with the 1080) and a boost clock speed of 1683MHz with slightly less cuda cores. Without overclocking this new GTX 1070 graphics card from Nvidia is capable of some extremely high end settings while gaming and even if you’re gearing up to go with a new GTX 1070 in a Gaming Laptop, performance is excellent!

With the desktop version of the GTX 1070 we started testing with a very affordable intel i5 combo and received a top score exceeding what is currently deemed necessary for a VR Ready Gaming PC 🙂  This is going to be a very popular graphics card indeed even if the video below is extremely boring to watch!

After our initial tests with the desktop GTX 1070 we updated our design from the i5-6400 we used originally to a slightly more powerful i5-6500 for our new GGPC Warlock GTX 1070 Gaming PC, this gave us a little more power balance (both CPU are great but the 6500 is certainly faster) and performance is now better in games like Assassins Creed. Check out our PC build on GGPC PC Part Picker if you’re looking to build a 1070 system yourself and are hunting for a starting point to tweak from 🙂

GGPC GIGABYTE GTX 1070 LAPTOP NEVER FIGHT ALONE

If you’re wanting to check out the GTX 1070 Gaming Laptop Virtual Reality Performance we’ve got the tests on GGPC YouTube Channel running both on battery and plugged into mains power to check out – spoilers – it passed both 😛

Below is DOOM from our GTX 1070 Gaming Laptop In-Game Framerate Playlist and if you’ve got some time you can check out a range of games with system stats shown top left and settings we used (always chasing 60FPS!) shown at the end of each gameplay 🙂

Moving onto the Desktop GTX 1080 we decided to do all tests at 3840×2160 resolution and chase 60FPS as always, we did this for a few reasons but mainly because if you’re after a GTX 1080 Gaming PC you’re probably wanting to play in 4K and also because too many attempts at 2560×1440 had us just selecting all ultra settings 😛

The Battlefield 1 BETA sure looks beautiful in 4K, the desert map was great fun and we can’t wait to do more tests when the full game releases, check out the new GTX 1080 Gameplay FPS Test Playlist for more performance tests in a range of games and let us know anything you’d like to see tested 🙂

So yes, it seems we’re in for some crazy times ahead!  Be sure to keep an eye on our YouTube Graphics Card FPS Channel to see more Graphics Cards in action!

Good Graphics Cards – Best of Computex 2016

ComputexNZ

This year the Computex Expo in Taipei timed itself well with the releases and announcements for new graphics cards from both Nvidia and AMD. We’ve all seen the founders edition GTX 1080 and thankfully the show was packed with excellent looking cooler designs from the masters at Gigabyte and Asus.  Unfortunately on the AMD side of things we had to sign NDA (no disclosure agreements) so we’ll show you more on the AMD RX 480 around its release on the 29th of June but lucky for us on the Nvidia side of the things we can show you all the goodness that’s coming to New Zealand soon!

From the Gigabyte team the new graphics cards are looking very impressive indeed with three unique designs to found on display and also powering some excellent gaming systems, choosing which card to get is going to be tough as they all look and perform so well!

The Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1080

The Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming GTX 1080 – that middle fan design is fantastic!

We could only find one card from Asus, a very nice looking STRIX version that we can’t wait to get our hands on 🙂

The Asus Strix GTX 1080

Laptops are about to enjoy a massive boost in gaming power as well with external graphics card enclosures on display from Gigabyte and Asus with a third design also coming from design cooperation between Silverstone and Gigabyte. These new accessories work via the Thunderbolt 3 connection and you’ll be able to change or upgrade the graphics card inside which is pretty damn outstanding news for the longevity of our laptops with of this new technology, being able to get a reasonably spec’d laptop with decent battery life to use when you’re out and about that can be transformed into a gaming beast when you return home is pretty wonderful news.

The Asus ROG design is very aggressive, certainly vibrant and quite large. At the front of the casing a plasma tube glows as red lightning crackles inside, the intricate Republic of Gamers design is quite impressive to behold. It should be noted we could hear a high pitched noise from the unit however (possibly the plasma tube) and hopefully this is fixed before the final version releases.

ROGExternalGraphicsCardforLaptops

The Gigabyte & Silverstone combined design stands vertically and you can see that Silverstone had a large hand in the aesthetics which ooze style. Venting upwards this one is likely going to perform very well and with the small footprint it could be the best of the bunch if you’re short on space.  The Gigabyte version is more industrial, clean and also the smallest of the bunch (by quite a bit!) but still able to fit long graphics cards inside. When talking to Gigabyte about the unit we learned it was also able to be daisy chained which had us thinking about crazy SLi like setups – we don’t quite know how this would work for SLi but if it does the potential for running multiple external graphics cards for ridiculously powerful setups is very appealing.

Laptop graphics solutions like these have the potential to change the way laptops are viewed by PC gamers. Currently, the most powerful of our gaming laptops struggle to power the internal dedicated graphics cards while running on battery and work best when plugged into mains power anyway so with solutions like these (although not really portable) we can turn our laptops into potent gaming systems and have the option of upgrading the graphics when needed instead of looking to replace our laptop.

We’ll be following this new technology very closely as it develops.  Be sure to keep your eyes on our computers blog for the latest news, check out our GGPC Instagram for more pictures of Custom Gaming PC, Gaming Gear and the exciting new Components.

Good Gaming PC – GTX 1080 Gaming PC in three flavours!

Today is the day!

The Nvidia GTX 1080 is now available in New Zealand and our friends over at PB Tech NZ have three stunning new Gaming PC builds using founders edition graphics cards from Asus, EVGA and Gigabyte. Each gaming system has been built around the flavour of graphics card inside, let’s check out the builds!

First up the very green Gigabyte G1 Gaming Machine!

GGPCPB1080G1Using the Gigabyte Z170 G1 Sniper Edition motherboard was a top choice, not only does this provide the unlocked i7-6700K processor with all the tools for a hearty overclock it also matches the NZXT H440 in green perfectly! Fitted with a maintenance free Cooler Master Nepton Liquid Cooling kit and Crucial Ballistix DDR4 ram this gaming rig is sure to make the most of the perfect matching Gigabyte GTX 1080 founders edition fitted inside 🙂

Dual storage devices include a Crucial solid state drive for really fast boot times + a large hard drive so you can install all your games and go crazy all night long!

Check out the green machine here = PB Gigabyte G1 GTX 1080 Gaming PC

GGPCPBEVGA1080Next on the list – an extremely tidy build with EVGA!
This build looks classy, the CM MasterCase 5 was a fine choice indeed and matches the EVGA Z170 FTW (for the win) Edition motherboard inside with it’s dark silver and black colour scheme. A fully modular EVGA SuperNOVA powersupply has also been used and it’s all looking extremely good together, a white LED lighting kit makes the components inside this build POP! You’ll also enjoy dual storage options yet again with this one and the build is also ready to add a second GTX 1080 in SLi when the new connectors arrive – crazy…

Check out more pictures and specs for this beast here = PB EVGA FTW GTX 1080 Gaming PC

GGPCPB1080ASUSLastly, and even more impressive than the first two, is the Asus Republic of Gamers version.

This one’s just a little more extreme and has a massive radiator (240mm) in the front to ensure great temperatures as you push your games to the limit and beyond! The Asus ROG HERO Motherboard is the AURA version and this is connected to the chassis RGB lighting so you’ll be able to go crazy with special effects and find the perfect theme, this also allows for a bunch of really cool effects and you could even set it to give you a light show when you play some music 🙂

The case is an epic silver Phanteks Evolv with tempered glass side panels so you’ll be able to gaze at your glorious GTX 1080 inside while it pulses to the beat of your tunes!

Check out more pictures and specs for this truly epic build here = PB Asus ROG GTX 1080 Gaming PC

Great builds indeed, these are all the creations of “Mojo” and we’ll be sure to feature more of his awesome builds in future GGPC blogs to come 🙂  We’ll be unveiling our own GGPC GTX 1080 build when the new Asus Strix versions of the 1080 arrive!

GAME ON!

Good Design – Asus ROG Spatha Gaming Mouse

We first caught a glimpse of the ROG Spatha Gaming Mouse when we attended at Computex last year (along with a killer keyboard we’re still hunting for) and it made for quite the impressive setup, at the time we didn’t realise this was going to be wireless!

RogSpathaDesignThe effort that Asus have put into the design of this large, sturdy, wireless mouse is quite remarkable – It packs a total of 12 programmable buttons, but the 6 side buttons are arranged in a way that forms the ROG EYE, this is quite a awesome feat with form meeting function in an excellent way.

The mouse is extremely responsive with specs much like the Logitech Chaos Spectrum wireless experience, giving a 1000hz refresh rate wirelessly and a staggering 2000hz (0.5ms) refresh rate for the ultimate performance over a wired connection.

Spatha is quite heavy in comparison but when you hold it you can tell it’s all because no expense was spared making this quality mouse, it uses the renowned Japanese made Omron switches and should you want to change them, ASUS have made things easier by making them interchangeable within sockets and have even included an extra pair 🙂  The angles of the buttons seems to put everything in reach and my mid sized hand fits comfortably over the large frame.

With such impressive attention to detail in the Spatha, Asus have undoubtedly created a premium gaming mouse.  Fun times ahead as we thrash this beast through a range of games, we’ll update our computers blog and GGPC Instagram with more glorious pics soon!

Just Landed in NZ – ROG GX700 Liquid Cooled Laptops

GGPCGX700Laptop

UPDATE: Well then, this was totally blown out of the water by the new GTX 10 series gaming laptops wasn’t it!

The Republic of Gamers GX700 is one of the most highly-anticipated laptops this year, and rightly so with a radical design that enables a whole new level of cooling and potential for the highest possible performance – it’s a genuine portable desktop replacement.

This gaming beast of the machine sets itself apart from the rest with the a fantastic liquid-cooling dock system for the laptop and this enables some rather extreme gaming performance along with overclockability while fully utilizing the intel HK-Series Skylake processor, and the mighty desktop GeForce GTX 980 in a notebook form factor – that’s the Nvidia GTX 980! (not GTX 980M).

That’s one crazy graphics card for a laptop!  The ROG GX700 is one of the several enthusiast grade laptops packing this extreme hardware, and it’s not a toned down version either.  This GTX 980 has more CUDA cores and texture mapping units than the GTX 980M and performance aligns with the desktop version of the graphics card.  It’s also worth noting that the GX700 GTX 980 has 8GB of memory vs the 4GB available on a desktop card like the Asus Strix GTX 980.

ROGGX700OnePlugWith its beautiful design, powerful specs + that oh so cool cooling system the GX700 has blown us away 🙂

Full credit to Asus design team for how easy it is to dock the cooler onto the back of the laptop and also for little touches like the single power cable to help reduce clutter.

Even without the cooler having a laptop with so much power to take with you is great but when you add in the liquid cooling system as well this new ROG creation becomes a excellent option for the travelling gamer or video editor on-the-go.  Asus even include a great custom case for both items so you can travel safely with your awesome laptop 🙂

Just a few of these marvelous machines have landed in New Zealand, so if you’re after one don’t delay – grab yourself a GX700 ROG Gaming Laptop today!

Good Gaming Monitor – Asus 1ms VE248HR available now!

Best value gaming monitor

Ohhhh we love a good value gaming monitor and Asus have a great one releasing right now in NZ called the VE248HR!

Living up to the epic reviews set by the previous generation VE248H (no R) is going to be tough but Asus have kitted this new monitor with a faster refresh rate now hitting that coveted 1ms response time for the smoothest visuals even in your most action packed moments 🙂

While this might not be the slimmest 1920×1080 gaming monitor that Asus makes it stands solid on a desk and can take a decent knock, the buttons along the lower left protrude so you can easily hit the right ones without having to turn the monitor to see them and the matt panel does a good job defusing reflections while producing some great colours 🙂 It’s also sporting 100×100 VESA mounts for those of us that enjoy multi monitor madness and even has a pair of small built in 1-watt speakers. Inputs and outputs wise you’ll find a HDMI (no MHL sorry), a DVI and even a VGA – I can understand why they kept a VGA with this one as the monitor is really well priced and would make a fine choice in an office, even if it’s just a little overkill for most!

We loved the previous model and we’re pretty sure this new one will be equally enjoyable – keep your eyes on the GGPC Computers Blog for the latest updates, gameplay tests and more!

Update: The Asus VE248HR Gaming Monitor is available now!

Good Gaming Monitor – ROG 34″ Curved G-Sync available now in New Zealand

ROGBANNER
First it was a concept at Computex in June last year, now the gaming display of your dreams has come true. In case you haven’t heard, the new ROG Swift PG348Q is the new flagship gaming display. For those of you in search of the ultimate gaming display, you’d be hard-pressed to find one better. Before looking the specs, let’s not overlook the award-winning design with the Armor Titanium and Plasma Copper color scheme and ROG logo light projection.

The gaming performance is equally matched with the aggressive design.

PG348Q is exceptional in all the essential factors for what makes a great gaming display; a large display, high resolution, vibrant colors and color accuracy, high refresh rate, fast response time and exclusive gaming technologies (such as ASUS GamePlus & GameVisual, and NVIDIA G-SYNC). Besides all of these, you also get an ultra-wide curved screen which has you more immersed because it curves around you for a panoramic view. The ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio will make use of your peripheral vision while gaming as you will see more content horizontally which you normally won’t see, and every inch of your display will be utilized when watching a movie in 2.40:1 (the majority of existing movies are already available in 2.35:1 or greater).

Having a 34-inch display so close to your face is simply massive, initially it would take a little time to get used to it if you’re upgrading from a smaller display.

After spending some time with it – you simply can’t go back…  This monitor is epic!

UPDATE: There’s a massive range of Gaming Monitors available in NZ now, but this one’s still the best!
