Good Overclocking – Benchmarks and BSOD

Today we’re looking at the software and methods used for overclocking different systems with various brands/combinations of hardware inside.

If you’ve never done this before it’s easier than ever before, with new Ai scanning tools that will help dodge the blue screen of death that occurs when we push our systems just that little bit too far 🙂

As always, overclock at your own risk! Doing this will void your warranty and it can also damage your components.

As we reach the limits on OC, our computers will likely freeze, BSOD and display odd graphical colour pops – all indications that we should pull back.

The basics are: Some Asus, Gigabyte Aorus and ASRock motherboards will allow you to overclock certain processors, graphics cards and memory to achieve better performance.

This could be for a ranking competition or simply for better frames in your favourite games.

While the overclocking process is similar with all, the software used for each varies depending on which brand you’re working with, be it AMD or Intel, EVGA or ROG & so on.

Before we jump into all the overclocking itself though, we’ll need something to test the system with. This is a good place to start as you’ll be running these benchmarks over and over again while you do the actual overclocking – and if you don’t run them first you’ll have to base performance marks to compare with!

Testing the Overclock – Benchmarks

Benchmarks provide a repeatable test, letting us check the system stability or performance, with a score at the end to compare with others from around the world. The game themed ones can be used by players seeking more information on what a certain upgrade/configuration would result in more FPS, while others provide a score to get you onto the global leaderboards.

Free Benchmarks

Prime 95 – A handy tool for overclockers and system stability checkers, Prime95 has a feature called “Torture Test” that allows maximum stress testing on the CPU and RAM. There are several options allowing the stress test to focus on the memory, processor, or a balance of both.

War Thunder is a free to play combat simulator that started with planes, and now includes tanks and boats. The built-in benchmark tool is amongst the best available today because the game has such depth available in its graphics setting options menu and the massive number of players to compare performance with. Highly recommended.

With any of the software above downloaded & installed, we’re ready to get the tools needed to do the actual overclocks. We’ll break this into different groups to keep things super easy.

Overclock Graphics Cards

By far the easiest to do, and able to be done with most graphics cards from the entry-level GTX 1650 to the highest end RTX 2080 Ti, overclocking your GPU is a fun way to get into the swing of things. The tools used focus on 2 main customisation points, core clock and memory clock – increases to either result in more performance.

Software: Brand dependant, you can find these on the brand websites for your specific graphics card too (the best place to get the latest version)

EVGA Precision X1 has a pretty solid guide, and OC scanner tools to help find the limits of your graphics card.

All the software packages work in the same way, but the interface for each is a little different. Be sure to run your benchmark first, at normal settings, and note the score before you start to play with these tools.

If you’re using RTX you can actually have the software OC for you, finding the limits and adjusting the settings automatically. If you want to do this select OC Scanner.

If you’re keen to manually overclock though, ensure fans are set to AUTO or 100%, and turn the power limit slider to max!

Then we slowly tweak up the Boost Clock with +100, with each increase, we click the tick to apply the settings – and then run the benchmark again and note the score.

Once the system starts to freak out, freeze or display error we ease back on the Boost Clock, and start increasing the Memory Clock.

The process is the same, raising the Memory Clock +100 until system failure strikes.

You can also click and type in target clock speed rather than using the sliders too, this becomes more helpful when you start to reach limits!

You’ll see the results in your benchmarks, and with our graphics card now overclocked we can move onto the CPU.

Overlocking a CPU was previously a bit more involved, however much has changed with the 9th Gen Intel K series CPU now having preset profiles on many motherboards and the release of the Intel Performance Maximizer. This automated processor overclocking tool examines your processor’s individual performance and programs personalised settings for a custom overclock – made simple.

If you want to go for a classic, manual OC this is still very doable and we can turn up our RAM here too, tap the F2 or DEL key as you boot to enter the BIOS.

Looking specifically at the guide for AORUS Z390 series, and the i9-9900K CPU – steps as below!

Enter “Advanced Frequency Settings”

Here you see the “Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.)” option. Change it to “Profile 1”. You might see a profile 2 with even higher settings – doesn’t work all the time but in some cases even a 3200MHz kit can run at 3600MHz.

Now, onto the CPU. The formula to calculate the frequency of your CPU is: CPU Base Clock * CPU Clock Ratio. The Intel i9-9900K CPU has a Base Clock of 100 and CPU Clock Ratio of 47 for a frequency of 100 * 47 = 4700MHz. In this Aorus guide the overclock target is 5GHz for a 300MHz increase.

Set your CPU Clock Ratio to “50”. (You can use the keys PgUP and PgDN to tweak settings)

Power management settings may decrease the stability of your system. Disable the following power management settings: Intel Speed Shift Technology, CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E), C3 State Support, C6/C7 State Support, C8 State Support and C10 State Support.

The formula for Uncore frequency is CPU Base Clock * Uncore Ratio = Uncore Frequency. Uncore frequency is the frequency of the non-core parts of the CPU- IE cache, memory controller, etc. To start, set your uncore to 47 and continue on with the guide. After you have determined your CPU’s highest overclock you can re-visit your uncore settings. In general higher uncore values do not produce meaningful performance differences, but they may improve benchmark score. Set CPU Uncore to “47”.

*Note: You may find that you lose stability at 5GHz CPU clocks if you raise the uncore frequency really high. Start with uncore at 4.7GHz and if your system is stable then raise it to a higher frequency. **Note: Please disable the “Ring to Core offset (Down bin)” under the Advanced CPU Core Settings. Under the “Chipset” tab disable VT-d.

Here you can disable settings or features which may not be necessary in your daily operation. VT-d is used for virtualization. If you don’t plan on using any virtual machines you can disable it. The same stands for Internal Graphics.

Now that we have set our memory XMP profile, Uncore, and CPU multiplier we must also adjust the CPU voltage (Vcore). In order for the CPU to operate at higher frequencies more voltage will be required. Go to the starting BIOS page (M.I.T.) and select the “Advanced Voltage Settings” option.

CPU Vcore: Raising this helps keeps the system stable at higher CPU frequencies. However, it also increases the amount of heat your CPU produces. We suggest you keep Vcore under 1.35V depending on your CPU cooling solution. Most CPU’s should be able to overclock to 5GHz on all the cores at this voltage, however CPUs are not all created equally. Some may need more voltage, some less. Set Vcore to “1.30” to start. If you system is not stable raise the voltage in increments of .01 with a maximum of 1.40V.

*Note that changing Vcore voltage also changes your Uncore voltage since they share the same power rail.

CPU VCCIO and CPU System Agent Voltage: Both of these settings help with DRAM frequency overclocking. Values up to 1.3-1.35V are high but they are ok if you are using air cooling. Since we used X.M.P. profiles for our memory these voltages will be automatically set.

SAVE YOUR SETTINGS!

Before rushing off to test your new overclock we suggest saving your profile. You will find this option on the last page of the BIOS named “Save & Exit”

Congratulations! You are now running at 5GHz, and now it’s time to make sure that it’s stable… so benchmark benchmark benchmark, tweak settings and go for the highest score you can!

Ahhh I do love a new release! With the RTX 2060 Graphics Cards now available in New Zealand it’s time to see what these GPU can do for ourselves.

Good Gaming PC – Final Fantasy XV Benchmark now live

The new FINAL FANTASY XV Official Benchmark application is now available for free download here and can be used to test a systems performance by displaying several of the events, maps and characters used in the game.

The score increases based on the FPS count, and the speed at which it will count up is based on your PC’s capabilities. Right now the Benchmark compatibility test takes is roughly 6 1/2 minutes for a full run, with the score results and a performance evaluation coming up at the very end.

Testing resolutions this time around are 1920×1080 and glorious 4K, as usual, we’ll be recording our scores with various configurations to make it easy to check against your own PC’s to see how things look with different hardware.

Good Gaming PC – X299, Intel Core i9 and i7X Gameplay Tests Begin!

GGPC has been busy playing some games with the first arrivals from a new i9 CPU range from intel \o/ We’ve started things off with a tasty new i9-7900X which boasts 10 cores and 4.3GHz Turbo Boost (4.5GHz with TB3!) but before we dive right in there is even more sweet hardware that’s released alongside the new intel CPU and it’s all looking suitably awesome, X299 motherboards have appeared in NZ already from those fine folks at Gigabyte and Asus!

For our first build we’ve used a beautiful Aorus X299 AORUS Gaming 3 motherboard in black (this one has really cool detailing on the headsinks too) and, much like the previous X99 motherboards these new X299 versions spread out the ram slots to the left and right of the CPU socket which really does help to make a build look EPIC 😛 With our test i9-7900X build we filled all the slots up with G.Skill Trident Z RGB Ram for a total of 64GB and it does indeed look epic when all the ram slots are lit up 🙂

Diving into the latest version of Minecraft 1.2 with Optifine and Sildurs Vibrant Shaders version 1.61 we were treated to some excellent performance at 4K, the quick test couldn’t have been in a better spot with the latest water effects on display as we ran around a village right beside the ocean 🙂 

Jumping into a little Overwatch next we has a blast happily charging around in our new D.VA Police Skin shooting down Pharah with Mercy in tow 🙂 Our FPS never dipping below 60 even with the settings cranked to a custom epic preset with SMAA on max at 4K \o/ 13 seconds into the video I muted the sound to talk to another GGPC tester – will have update this one soon 😛

From here we jumped into a bunch of games until we finally hit one that couldn’t quite hit our 60FPS 4K target, well at least not all of the time 😛 Black Desert Online is currently featured in the massive Steam summer sale and the player base is MASSIVE right now – perfect for some really hardcore testing 🙂

Starting things off with the most popular activity in the game we began hunting for large mobs to kill so we could really test things out with lot’s of effects on screen, we tried several areas and found the heaviest zones to be the forest and giant canyons, especially the area below which was covered in a thick fog at the time of testing. We followed this up by putting even more stress on the system by turning the Ui off which activates a filter in BDO, check out the Ui Off, Farming Mobs FPS test here and Ui Off, Fighting a Giant in the Forrest test here.

The largest city in the game is known as Calpheon and it’s pretty massive, this area is notorious for reducing even the most powerful systems to low FPS but we didn’t have a bad time at all riding our horse through the town with the biggest dips happening only for a moment right in the middle at the marketplace.

Rounding off the Black Desert tests we wanted to see what performance was like with hundreds of players in the area so we headed to the smaller town of the Velia which has a popular fishing spot, it didn’t disappoint with so many players loading them happened in chunks!

Blown away by the performance of this “not really intended for gaming but pretty darn good at it i9 CPU” we decided to fire up the latest Final Fantasy Stormblood benchmark check out another new CPU that’s coming out for the same new X299 platform – an i7-7740X \o/

Pretty cool right! Even though we loved every minute gaming with the i9 our little i7 did great in the benchmark test – we can’t wait to try this one out with even more games 🙂

Good Gaming PC – The GTX 1070 Dark Knight

GGPC DARK KNIGHT GAMING PCWith our most recent Dark Knight eSports edition we changed things up a lot upgrading to a very nice new chassis, an unlocked and water cooled intel i7-6700K + 500GB SSD and massive 4TB HDD for storage but the biggest change came from us fitting an EVGA Hybrid GTX 1070, which also has a very fancy all in one liquid cooler attached 🙂

And this is where things get fun 🙂 The GTX 1080 + i7-6700K is able to hit a whopping 19400 in the Final Fantasy Benchmark run which is pretty excellent, our tests with the GTX 1070 + i7-6700K in Paladin gave us an impressive result of 17800 which was actually a lot closer than we thought it would be… this might actually be possible with an OC. In game it was very difficult to tell the two graphics card apart performance wise (both run most on ultra settings pretty darn well) but the EVGA Hybrid 1070 under full load is much much quieter, something we specifically wanted for this build as it’ll be used for a lot of live game streaming.

We had such a good time testing things out in our GTX 950 Hero Overclocking Blog so we thought we’d do it again and see if we how close we could get to the 19400 score with our Dark Knight 1070 by making full use of that sweet cooling 🙂

The rules are simple, overclocking of the graphics card is savvy but we’re not going to touch the CPU or RAM at all 😛

We’ll be using our favourite FREE benchmark for this one set to maximum detail at 1920×1080, you can download the Final Fantasy Benchmark software via this blog from Nvidia Benchmarks, it’s free so you can install and test your own systems at home and compare with various configurations we have in our Gaming PC Benchmark Playlist.

For overclocking we’ll be using the Asus GPU tweak II software (also FREE!) as we love how easy it is to use, feel free to use any software you want for this though as it all does pretty much the same thing. It doesn’t matter which flavour of graphics card you are using either – other software choices like Afterburner or Precision will still work just fine 🙂

Starting with a base test at stock settings we exceed our previous base test and score 18000, this is going to be easier than first thought but we’ll still be needing around 9% performance gains to get reach to our dream target of 19400 \o/

We then started tweaking a little, first cranking power limit to max for a run before we tinker with the all important Core Clock and Memory Clock. We then tweaked these up with basic +100 to each, with GPU tweak II you can click and type in target clock speed rather than using the sliders, also don’t forget to click the tick to apply the settings. This gave us slightly better results with a score coming in a 18400, now to close the gap!

With a little tweaking and a few long tests to be sure it’s stable we managed an impressive 19228 with the 1070! (less than 1% off our GTX 1080 score!) You can check out the final scene in our benchmark run video below, with a quick snapshot of our settings shown at the very end to make things easy if you’re wanting to tinker for yourself at home – maybe even push things up a little higher!

If you’re overclocking to see just how far you can get remember that not all graphics cards limits are identical and overclocking results can vary a bit from card to card but that makes it all the more fun when you get a really good one! Go slowly as you increase the clock speeds look out for graphical glitches so you know when the limits of your card are getting close. The first one to keep an eye out for is pop in (or missing) textures, if you see odd colour dimming or pink and green flashes your OC is likely a little too high 😛 If you go wayyy to far you’ll crash either the benchmark software, nvidia display driver or force reboot your PC so play it safe and go slow so you avoid having to reboot.
