Good Gaming PC – The GTX 1050 Hero

Good Gaming PC NZ GGPC Hero GTX 1050Fresh from the workshop our latest GGPC Hero Gaming PC returns armed with EVGA GTX 1050 graphics \o/ Like all GGPC builds we’re always tinkering with slightly different components to see if we can squeeze out a little more performance for each $ spent, and on that note – let’s take a look at the latest tweaks!

Firstly, a really cool update that effects all our Gaming PC in the GGPC custom chassis – we’ve taken out all the LED strip lighting kits and static fans and replaced both with RGB cooling 😛 A total of three RGB fans are now fitted in the front panel of the chassis and both the colour and fan speed can be adjusted via an included remote control, we left the rear 120mm outtake in the chassis as a standard GGPC black fan so you can game comfortably without a blinding LED directly in your line of sight. When the rig is on your desk and the glow from the front shines backwards to light up the beautiful components inside 🙂 Taking out the strips has also brought down the internal temperature a little and being able to tweak the fan speeds allows the gaming rig to run even quieter than before.

Another little tweak is a small update to the internal AC Wireless cards we use which now supports Bluetooth 4.2, this gives us improvements in three areas – co-existence (bluetooth and 4G (LTE) didn’t get on well, this is now fixed), smarter connectivity (improved re-connection timeout for saving battery life) and improved data transfer (connects more things!). Oh, one last thing – it’s wayyy faster than the previous versions 😛

Now onto a tweak specifically for the Hero build – we added a new GTX 1050 from EVGA 🙂 This one’s as much about ascetics as performance with the new GPU being a nice gunmetal grey that suits the case perfectly and in-game it’s a little beast!

In our last blog on the Hero we tested to see just how much performance we could get by overclocking the graphics but before we get into that let’s see what the new graphics card can do at factory settings with some in-game performance tests, after all “What is a good gaming PC?” can only be answered by “it plays the games you want to play!”

First up, the new Hero proves itself to be a good gaming PC for Overwatch players by keeping things very smooth as we get up close and personal with Roadhog and his wonderful hook 😛

If you’re thinking about getting a good gaming PC for Minecraft you’ll probably be interested in playing with Shaders on, for our tests here we installed Optifine HD D3 Ultra + Sildurs Vibrant Shaders v1.153 Medium and then went for our signature run around looking for a nice town by the water 🙂

This next one’s still under development so we’ll be stepping back in to test things out with each update but right now the just released Star Marine early access for Star Citizen is working very well with these gaming PC specs, we happily ran around the awesome looking space stations chasing down bandits while having a blast being sneaky in space 🙂

Heaps of more games to test and fun times ahead! You can check out more GTX 1050 Gameplay FPS Tests here and many more on our GGPC YouTube Channel, keep your eyes on the GGPC Computers Blog and we’ll update with the latest.

Good Gaming PC – The GTX 1070 Dark Knight

GGPC DARK KNIGHT GAMING PCWith our most recent Dark Knight eSports edition we changed things up a lot upgrading to a very nice new chassis, an unlocked and water cooled intel i7-6700K + 500GB SSD and massive 4TB HDD for storage but the biggest change came from us fitting an EVGA Hybrid GTX 1070, which also has a very fancy all in one liquid cooler attached 🙂

And this is where things get fun 🙂 The GTX 1080 + i7-6700K is able to hit a whopping 19400 in the Final Fantasy Benchmark run which is pretty excellent, our tests with the GTX 1070 + i7-6700K in Paladin gave us an impressive result of 17800 which was actually a lot closer than we thought it would be… this might actually be possible with an OC. In game it was very difficult to tell the two graphics card apart performance wise (both run most on ultra settings pretty darn well) but the EVGA Hybrid 1070 under full load is much much quieter, something we specifically wanted for this build as it’ll be used for a lot of live game streaming.

We had such a good time testing things out in our GTX 950 Hero Overclocking Blog so we thought we’d do it again and see if we how close we could get to the 19400 score with our Dark Knight 1070 by making full use of that sweet cooling 🙂

dark knight

The rules are simple, overclocking of the graphics card is savvy but we’re not going to touch the CPU or RAM at all 😛

We’ll be using our favourite FREE benchmark for this one set to maximum detail at 1920×1080, you can download the Final Fantasy Benchmark software via this blog from Nvidia Benchmarksit’s free so you can install and test your own systems at home and compare with various configurations we have in our Gaming PC Benchmark Playlist.

For overclocking we’ll be using the Asus GPU tweak II software (also FREE!) as we love how easy it is to use, feel free to use any software you want for this though as it all does pretty much the same thing. It doesn’t matter which flavour of graphics card you are using either – other software choices like Afterburner or Precision will still work just fine 🙂

Starting with a base test at stock settings we exceed our previous base test and score 18000, this is going to be easier than first thought but we’ll still be needing around 9% performance gains to get reach to our dream target of 19400 \o/

We then started tweaking a little, first cranking power limit to max for a run before we tinker with the all important Core Clock and Memory Clock. We then tweaked these up with basic +100 to each, with GPU tweak II you can click and type in target clock speed rather than using the sliders, also don’t forget to click the tick to apply the settings. This gave us slightly better results with a score coming in a 18400, now to close the gap!

With a little tweaking and a few long tests to be sure it’s stable we managed an impressive 19228 with the 1070! (less than 1% off our GTX 1080 score!) You can check out the final scene in our benchmark run video below, with a quick snapshot of our settings shown at the very end to make things easy if you’re wanting to tinker for yourself at home – maybe even push things up a little higher!

If you’re overclocking to see just how far you can get remember that not all graphics cards limits are identical and overclocking results can vary a bit from card to card but that makes it all the more fun when you get a really good one! Go slowly as you increase the clock speeds look out for graphical glitches so you know when the limits of your card are getting close. The first one to keep an eye out for is pop in (or missing) textures, if you see odd colour dimming or pink and green flashes your OC is likely a little too high 😛 If you go wayyy to far you’ll crash either the benchmark software, nvidia display driver or force reboot your PC so play it safe and go slow so you avoid having to reboot.

Lot’s of fun to be had with this kind of thing in any case, keep your eyes on GGPC Computers Blog for the latest gameplay tests, custom builds and more!

Good Gaming – Battlerite FREE WEEKEND incoming!

GGPC Battlerite Gameplay FPS Test Begin

UPDATE: Battlerite is available as early access on Steam right now but this weekend it opens up and we can all play free!

An action-packed Team Arena Brawler focused on competitive combat. Fight side by side with teammates to the sound of the roaring crowd in vibrant, colosseum surroundings.

The game itself is a little bit like League of Legends and Smite but without the lanes and creeps so the focus is purely on fast paced PvP matches with a range of champions that have different strengths and abilities. There are 15 champions available currently and these provide players jumping in with a decent split of melee, ranged and support to play with. Once in matches it’s all about timing and precision where predictability leads to punishment. Each battle is a race to win three rounds, the rounds are generally pretty fast paced, usually over in around 1 minute – to ensure an entertaining fight a force field will start to move inwards pushing the players in together for a final clash in the center of the arena.

We’ve taken one of our new Custom Gaming PC in for a quick 3v3 match with the starting character Jade to see what the performance is like and as you’ll see from the YouTube gameplay framerate test below – things are looking very good indeed 🙂

Next we moved tests onto the new GTX 1060 Gaming Laptop to see how good things would be with this latest generation of mobile hardware. Battlerite matches were starting to get tougher as we increased in rank and now a more tactical approach was needed to win each round, playing as Varesh our roll was to debuff enemies while shielding allies against incoming damage and the GTX1060 + i7-6700HQ config was able to keep above 60FPS even during these most intense moments.

Finishing up the first round of testing we installed on our GGPC GTX 1080 Dark Knight jumped in Sirius, a melee healer with some excellent teleports that can heal teammates and deal damage to opponents, the matches now were getting pretty darn difficult with players teamwork becoming necessary to split opponents up. Performance was excellent at 4K with max settings and the added clarity certainly makes watching opponents ragdoll on death a lot clearer 🙂

So far we’ve had a blast in Battlerite and can’t wait to see where the developers take this one, if you’re looking to a battle that’s quicker than ARAM this could be the perfect ticket 😛

GAME ON!

Good Gaming PC – eSports Edition Live Streaming Tests!

GGPC Live Stream tests begin

A good gaming PC should be able to play the games you’re wanting to play and with our latest designs in our lineup, the eSports editions of Paladin and Dark Knight, we wanted to make rigs that could not only play the games but also stream them simultaneously via Twitch, YouTube, Xsplit and other services. This of course means a lot of testing in the background to make sure things are GOOD! We’ve been quietly checking out several configs over the last few months and now that we’ve got things perfect (massive thanks to Bubba Kush for all the help with this!) it’s time to start sharing some game streams so we can check out things for together 🙂

Today at around 2pm (New Zealand Time) Gabbu will be live streaming a bit of Witcher 3 and League of Legends on the i7-6700K + GTX 1070 config, if you’re tuning in make sure to set quality to “source” so we can double check our settings are good, we’ll be increasing these throughout a series of tests on different internet providers and packages to get a feel for what’s possible over the various connection types in NZ. Once we’ve got a good feel for things we’ll begin capturing a series of new tests via our GGPC YouTube channel with settings used and any helpful tweaks so everyone can join in on this rather fun way to play games with people around the world 🙂

Good Gaming – Fractured Space free-to-play space MOBA early access is LIVE

GGPC Fractured Space EARLY ACCESS

Fractured Space is a free-to-play tactical space MOBA that will have you fighting for control in spectacular close quarter battles with massive warships for dominance.

Brought to life in the stunning Unreal Engine 4, you captain a vessel of unmatched combat authority choosing from an ever increasing number of specialised galactic warships. Mastery of a single ship is your first step, understanding your own capabilities and that of your team before taking the fight to the enemy is crucial for success though as things can turn bad very quickly 😛 As your experience increases so will your ability to choose which victories to chase and when to warp out and re-group for another epic clash.

Pick a manufacturer, choose a class and customize your weapon loadouts. As you play you gain the right to command more ships while earning credits to add them to your fleet. Tailor your craft to your combat preferences with crew and weapons options then take on your your interstellar juggernaut into battle. The composition of your team’s fleet is vital to your success, battles may be fought with firepower but they are won with positioning. Your team of five will face an equally ambitious opponent in a ceaselessly transforming fight for control. Your plans will evolve, tactics will shift but as a team you will emerge triumphant. Your individual prowess may be great but it insignificant next to well organised communication, support and teamwork in this one!

Fractured Space is now available to download via Steam Early Access, if you like MOBA games like DOTA 2 or League of Legends and spaceships then this ones definitely worth checking out 🙂

GAME ON!

Good Gaming – Paladins Champions of the Realm – OPEN BETA is LIVE

GGPC PaladinsPaladins BETA is now live via Steam and we can all jump into the action offered by this new free to play FPS MOBA game 🙂 Those familar with Overwatch gameplay will pick up the game quickly but it’s pretty good for new players also with an early set of player vs bot matches to get you used to things. The easy matches give players a nice opportunity to try out all the new characters – We highly recommend having a go with Fernando who has a shield a lot like Reinhart but instead of a hammer he’s wielding a transforming flamethrower lance.

There is a card power up system which is pretty cool and every hero has a unique set of power-ups specific to them, with Makoa we got cards that caused our shell spin to heal and another that added lifesteal to our dredge hook attack along with all the usual +HP and run faster stuff 😛

While Paladins might not be as polished as other options it’s still a lot of fun and that free to play price is oh so good 🙂 Performance wise, with the game being in early access things could change a lot but right now the RX 460 + i5-6400 combo pumps out around 100FPS 🙂

GG!

Good Gaming Laptop – Gigabyte GTX 1060 P55Wv6 is GOOD!

UPDATE: GTX 1060 Laptop Gameplay FPS Playlist

Sporting a similar look to it’s big brother the new P55W v6 Gaming Laptop looks a little sleeker with its 15.6″ frame in black with a subtle orange trim running down the sides (a perfect match with the new Prodigy Gaming Headset from Logitech G), inside is a killer i7-6700HQ + GTX 1060 combo so we’ve got the power needed for some pretty high end gaming and when connected to mains power this laptop is also a VR Ready system \o/

Starting tests off with a good long game of Battlefield 1 the Gigabyte P55W v6 is looking very good indeed running above 60FPS at ultra!

Quickly making our way into the Witcher 3 the GTX 1060 does very well yet again, with a little tweaking of the settings we hit our 60FPS target while slicing down bandits 🙂 If you’re lucky enough to have somehow not played the Witcher 3 yet a Game of the Year Edition has just released and you’re in for a treat as this single player game looks good and plays great.

The multiplayer esports hit Overwatch plays pretty flawlessly on this config also, busting out over 100FPS at times while playing at maximum settings.  Competitive play is in full swing and if you’re looking for a laptop to play on the go, the GTX 1060 is ready for the challenge!

For Virtual Reality you’ll want to be connected to mains power and below is an extremely boring video showing the performance check 😛 Until we figure out the best way to capture the 90hz this is the best way we can show performance but once we figure things out we’ll replace these videos with some actual VR Gaming 🙂

When checking out the performance on battery we tested a couple of important things out, the first being battery life while heavy gaming which was 82mins (impressive) and the second, more interesting thing was how being on battery affected the performance of the dedicated GTX 1060 graphics inside. For this test we ran on battery while playing some Battlefield 1 and brought the charge down down to around 35% remaining then recorded some gameplay showing the differences in performance you can expect when gaming on the go – this gaming laptop did much better than anything else we’ve had the pleasure of testing with only a very small settings tweak needed to keep playing with excellent FPS. (It’s quite possible the GTX 1050 laptops will be able to play without tweaking settings between plugged in and battery, can’t wait to see!)

Keep your eyes on our GGPC YouTube Channel for more gameplay to check out!

Looking closely at the machine itself we find excellent build quality and very little flex, the full sized chiclet keyboard has is a clean white LED that makes things easy to read and we see the addition of a USB Type-C port which is great for transferring massive files.  It has HDMI 2.0 for connecting to a 4K screen all the other little mod cons we look for like Bluetooth 4.1 and a cup holder (JK) but yet again – no DisplayPort sadly! The 1080P IPS display looks beautiful though with great colours and very little reflection or glare from the matt panel 🙂

Gigabyte P55Wv6 Gaming Laptop GGPC Edges

UPDATE: We’ve continued testing out everything this excellent new laptop has to offer (we also checked out other versions from MSi and Asus to compare) and now that we’ve had a really good go with it we’re happy to give the Gigabyte P55Wv6 our GGPC recommendation – This GTX 1060 Gaming Laptop is GOOD!

GGPC Good GTX 1060 Gaming Laptop
