Those talented techs at Phanteks have created a new addition to the now iconic EVOLV series with two new chassis joining the range, these latest offerings are known as the EVOLV SHIFT and they’re looking really good! All up there are four versions of these new chassis, with two colour options (the black Evolv Shift looks amazing) and two unique sizes available.
The superb craftsmanship of the Evolv Shift can be seen in every detail, although extremely compact compared to the mid sized chassis we often see, the Shift delivers a versatile space in which we can pack in plenty of powerful components – and pack them in we did!
For our first build in the smaller Shift chassis, we grabbed the Gigabyte B250N ITX Pheonix motherboard which conveniently has wireless built in, a 2 x 8GB kit of G.Skill Trident Z and a little SFX power supply from Corsair. With the large windows running down both sides and providing such a nice view we opted to replace our intel stock cooler with the Phanteks TC12LS low profile cooler, having used this previously in our CM Pro 6 RGB Sync test build we yet again replaced the standard fan with a very nice RGB one to really light things up, graphics wise even the smallest version of this chassis can fit a full-length (35cm) card inside but it’s important to note that even though we absolutely love the massive Aorus 1080Ti its triple slot form factor was a just a little too large for this one 😛
Building with the Shift is easier than most small cases due to the way they’ve separated it into different areas, the top of the chassis is where you mount your motherboard and a PCIe extender then attaches to another space behind this where you will fit your graphics card – with the smaller Shift, if you go with a dual fangraphics card it can be fitted backplate facing either in or out, with the longer triple fan cards we found the best fit is backplate out – keep that in mind when choosing which card to build with 😛
This leaves a fairly large space in the lower compartment which lets the air flow in and upwards, you could easily fit a 120mm AiO liquid cooling kit in here if you wanted too. While the power supply has its own special output on the base of the build all your outputs from the motherboard and graphics card come out at the top of the case hidden beneath a push-to-release cover panel which serves as the primary airflow output vent, there is a little hole on the rear of this area that cables can be routed through.

Now if you’re thinking to yourself 1440p is nice but why not 4K you’d be the same as us, sadly for reasons unknown the options with the game only go as high as 2560×1440? Lucky for us though a little tinkering within the config file allows you to set your own resolution 🙂
Here’s a quick 4K game capture with the GTX 1050 – this amazing little graphics card (exact settings shown at the end of the video) still manages to keep above 60FPS when in game and only dipped into the high 50’s during the replays – crazy cool!
If you’re wondering about laptopperformance rest assured things are looking just as good 🙂 Though it’s a little harder to find a 1440p screen on a laptop we managed to have a quick go with the new Gigabyte Aero 14 which packs a GTX 1060 inside and performance was excellent as you can see for yourselves below!
This promotion is valid from the 30th May till the 25th of September so get your details in and we’ll see you in the arena!
Those fine folks at Nvidia and Gigabyte are having an Overwatch screenshot contest with some excellent GTX gear up for grabs \o/
This one’s as easy as playing some Overwatch and taking some sweet pics along the way!
When you’ve captured your amazing screenshot you then upload it the hi-res gallery here and register your details. Once that’s all set if you also want to post it onto Facebook use the hashtags#GAMEREADY #PLAYOVERWATCH – this competition is set to run until the 28th May.
When it comes to taking screenshots you can use the classic ‘printscrn‘ button on your keyboard but that great shot will get overwritten if you decide to ‘printscrn’ again. A better option here is to use the screenshot tool within Nvidia Experience, it’s tied to ALT+F1 by default and with this you can happily take as many shots as you like. They’ll automatically save to the videos folder, the same one as your Shadowplay clips to save in.
This also presents another really cool way to do screenshots, you can record a Shadowplay clip and then afterwards capture the perfect screenshot from it!
In Overwatch you can turn your HUD off with ALT+Z, this happens to be the default shortcut for Nvidia Experience also so be sure to change one of them before you jump into a game, or you could find yourself stuck in NO-HUD mode 😛 Without all the stats on screen you can capture some beautiful shots like this quick one we captured below, now we just need to get a good POTG with our new D.Va Police skin…
Be sure to submit your design in before the 31st May deadline, from there the finalists (six spots available total) will be chosen by Nvidia and Cooler Master and then it goes onto public voting around the 9th of June with the winners are set to be announced for this one around June 26th, 2017.
These are some pretty amazing prizes they’ve put up for grabs so get designing!
We’ve done a very quick design to get a feel for the template – this is going to be addictive… we can enter more than once – right 😛 This kind of easy to use template would be a great option for our own Custom Gaming PC design tool, we’ll get working on adding something like this in soon 🙂
As usual the hardest part is going to be deciding which game to choose, so let’s take a closer look at both options.
First up – Ghost Recon: Wildlands!
Bolivia, a few years from now. The country has become the largest cocaine producer in the world. The Santa Blanca drug cartel has turned the country into a narco-state, leading to lawlessness, injustice, and violence. The Ghosts, an elite US Special Forces team, is sent behind enemy lines to wreak havoc and takedown the cartel.
This one enjoyed the largest turnout during the Ubisoft open beta phase and is best played with a group of friends, if you find yourself in solo queue being a helicopter pilot or driver for a bunch of randoms is still pretty darn fun as well!
Next up – For Honor!
This new hack’n’slash capture’n’hold game proved itself early on with some very beautiful graphics and a slick melee battle system that had us ramming our way through the ranks to take on opposing warriors in fierce hand to hand (or blade to blade) combat.
Many, many hours have been spent in For Honor at GGPC NZ, the matches often become fantastically close battles with the skill based player matching systems working very well indeed – this one is truly exceptional if you play often, you’ll start to recognise opponents from previous encounters in game and the focus shifts from an all out battle to hunting each other down relentlessly with some face-offs lasting the entire round.
This is a register to redeem promotion, once you’ve got your awesome new hardware simply visit the registration sites as below depending on your chosen flavour, enter the details as prompted and you’ll get a game code via email 🙂
Attention all designers – a really cool contest is on right now with a massive prize up for grabs – and New Zealand is on the list of eligible countries for this one!
The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is the most powerful gaming graphics card you can get, it deserves a PC gaming chassis worthy of its power.
That’s where you come in!
For this one they’ve highlight four chassis for us to choose from as a base for the design, from there we must design our build (inside and out, this must be more than just a paint job!) and then post it via Twitter or Instagram, tag @NVIDIAGeForce and use #UltimateGeForcePC.
The chassis we have to choose from are…
Cooler Master MasterCase 5
In Win 909
There are four judges who will be scrutinizing the designs, Jason (JayzTwoCents), Lee Harrington (PCJunkieMods), Peter Brands and Wei Zheng so make sure you put everything you’ve got into this one – these chaps are crazy good!
What are you waiting for? Make your own Ultimate Gaming PC design for the chance to win a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and up to $10K (USD) in cash!
Gigabyte have continued to update their excellent line up of GTX 10 series gaming laptops and now the first of the Kaby Lake refresh has arrived in New Zealand – among which is the absolutely stunning Aero series which is now packing the mighty i7-7700HQ and a 6GB GTX 1060!
What makes this series so darn impressive is the laptop sports a gorgeous 2560×1440 resolution IPS screen packed into a very portable 14″ package, it’s simply a joy to look at 🙂
Weighing in at around 2KG this is one of the few laptops available now that’s perfect for work (it’s so fast!) and also great for gaming after hours. It’s super thin too, coming in just under 2cm slim and yet those talented chaps at Gigabyte still managed to fit very comfortable auto-adjusting backlit keyboard… and individual macro keys!
Aside from the very latest in hardware inside you’ll also find it has all the connections we look for like USB Type-C and HDMI 2.0 for connecting to a 4K 60FPS screen should you decide that you want to play a little League of Legends on the TV when you get home 😛
UPDATE: We were blown away when we first tested the GTX 1060 in laptops and with this new, more portable option things are certainly looking even better now for the gamer on go 🙂 Even with the new slimmer frame this GTX 1060 Kaby Lake combo still pushes out the frames like a big gaming PC and with that beautiful 2560×1440 screen games are a joy to play! Even in the most intense firefights, the Gigabyte Aero manages to keep thing nice and smooth as we try to capture the flag in Overwatch below \o/
The hardest part will be deciding which free game to choose! Let’s take a look at what’s on offer 🙂
First up – Maize
A first-person adventure game about what happens when two scientists misinterpret a memo from the U.S. Government and create sentient corn. And that last sentence is pretty much the least ridiculous thing about the game 😛
Next on the list – Raw Data
A made-for-VR high-octane combat experience combining elements of shooters with tower defense. Active VR gameplay involves your whole body as you put your wits, boldness and endurance to the test. Intuitive controls completely immerse you within the game world, from engaging with objects to pulling weapons off your body to strategically choosing your loadout. And all the while, you’ll be slashing, shooting, deflecting, ducking and dodging as you fend off waves of androids set to “kill.”
And the final choice – Redout
Redout is a tribute to the old racing monsters such as F-Zero, WipeOut, Rollcage, and POD. It is designed to be an uncompromising, fast, tough and satisfying driving experience, soaked in that vertigo that stands at the core of the arcade racing genre. The floating system and driving models are based on physics: each turn, slope, hard braking, acceleration, each turn and twist of the track will apply a unique force to the ship. A sharp low-polygon style blends meshes and terrains with the latest state-of-the-art shading and lighting effects provided by the Unreal Engine 4, creating beautiful and instantly recognisable aesthetics. Breezy coastlines, eerie frozen landscapes, vast desert plains: the melancholic, dystopian atmosphere of a semi abandoned Earth is the background for the most high-speed, tense and beautiful futuristic racing clashes.
Tough choices for sure but getting your game bonus is easy 🙂 Once you’ve got your awesome new hardware visit the Gigabyte Redemption Site or EVGA Redemption Site to register for your game code, you’ll then receive a special code by email and once you’ve got that visit the Nvidia Game Code website and enter it in 🙂
